I was introduced to Wallball in 2010 through playing Squash and Fives. The simplicity, energy and inclusivity immediately hooked me. The Wallball community is very special and I have met amazing people from all walks of life. I’ve recently been appointed captain of the Women’s GBR Team, which is an incredible honour.
I have so many memorable matches but I would say my most memorable match was at The World Games in Colombia in 2013.The energy of the crowd was overwhelming and I will never forget how nerve-racking but exciting it was to play in front of them. Another memorable match was at my first Worlds in Ireland in 2012; doubles against team Peurto Rico. It was a close match that we lost in the end but I came away feeling like I had finally grasped the game and I couldn’t wait to get on court again. Playing Miranda Scheffer in the semi-finals at the UK Open in 2014 was another highlight, despite losing 21-17 it gave me more confidence in my own game. Beating Scheffer and Beckers in a Doubles match in the EuroPro Tour in France in 2015 was another highpoint as they are the current European Doubles Champions. I have also loved my matches against the Spanish – the games are always face-paced and intense. Playing socially in the parks in New York City is special and is something I hope every Wallball player from Europe gets to experience.
Wallball – a universal sport for everyone – simply fun!
I hope to promote the women’s game and get more females of all ages playing. I have witnessed how powerful sport can be in breaking down barriers and empowering people. I am therefore determined to make a positive contribution to developing Wallball in the UK. I also hope to continue to travel to tournaments to reunite with friends. - Kathleen Briedenhann
